NATURAL TOOTHPASTE TO REVERSE TOOTH DECAY
Can natural toothpaste stop tooth decay, or is there more to it? Any tube of toothpaste used with proper brushing and flossing of your teeth will help prevent tooth decay. However, there are certain factors that make an impact towards preventing tooth decay. What you eat, how often you visit your dentist and your toothpaste can all make an impact towards a healthy smile.
Most consumers search for products based on the label and cost of the toothpaste, assuming that what you get is what you see on the label. With the internet being easy accessible and searchable with informational websites, more attention is being focused on the hidden dangers of common ingredients found in toothpaste including many natural products. Toothpaste and other personal care products formulated with safe ingredients (chemical or natural), including natural toothpaste, natural skin care, and other safe and non irritating products can offer tremendous benefits without exposure to harsh chemicals.
However, even natural ingredients can have harmful side effects. Plants and herbal extracts have potent medicinal properties, and many so called 'natural' toothpaste also contain harsh preservatives and abrasives which can make your teeth sensitive, and may have nothing to do with preventing tooth decay.
What is Tooth Decay?
Tooth decay occurs when certain type of bacteria use sugars in food to make acids. The acid, in turn, makes a hole or cavity in the tooth. Saliva and certain ingredients in toothpaste fight the bacteria from turning sugar into acid. Saliva does it with such minerals as calcium and phosphate. These minerals help the outer surface of the tooth, called enamel to repair itself by replacing the area that was attacked by the acid.
The acid initially causes "demineralization" which appears as a white spot. This is the first sign of tooth decay. If the attack continues, more minerals are lost, the enamel becomes weaker, the cavity grows and deepens, further damaging the tooth. Eventually it can reach the nerve or close to it, causing pain and eventually tooth loss. Once the cavity goes through the enamel, it will continue to grow. Before it crosses the enamel into the softer part of the tooth (dentin), tooth decay can be stopped and reversed.
What is Natural Toothpaste and Can it Reverse Tooth Decay?
Fluoride is the mineral that has traditionally been used to stop tooth decay and prevent it. But what most people are unaware of, is that the amount of fluoride in toothpaste is minimal and not fully effective, and with the added foaming detergent sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), it's even less effective, as studies have suggested. Fluoride is not the best choice in children's toothpaste either. Children under the age of six tend to swallow toothpaste, especially when they are using brightly colored toothpaste that have sweet flavors that taste like candy or bubble gum. There is a warning on the back of toothpaste tubes with fluoride, mandated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to state:
"Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, seek professional help or contact a poison control center immediately."
Swallowing too much fluoride is hazardous. In areas that have high levels of fluoridated water, dental fluorosis is common. This appears as white, brown and black stains on the enamel of the teeth. Poisoning is another side effect of swallowing too much fluoride. A single tube of fluoride toothpaste has the potential of killing a child weighing less than 60 lbs. (Whitford 1987a). Natural toothpaste that is safe, should also be safe enough if swallowed.
Natural Toothpaste Ingredients That Help Prevent Tooth Decay
To help reverse the initial stages of tooth decay, (demineralization), certain ingredients have been found to be helpful. Dicalcium phosphate has many benefits, one of them being to help remineralize enamel (the outer surface of the tooth). This mineral closely resembles the minerals in saliva that help protect against tooth decay.
The other ingredient that reports are showing helps towards preventing tooth decay is xylitol. This safe sweetener not only makes the toothpaste or chewing gum taste good, but helps increase flow of saliva, and studies are showing promise that it helps fight gum disease as well as helping dry mouth.
Cleure natural toothpaste contains dicalcium phosphate and xylitol. Reports indicate dicalcium phosphate helps tartar control, it is a mild abrasive, and whitening agent, as well as balancing calcium and phosphate levels for healthy teeth. It helps remineralize areas of teeth that have been attacked by acid from bacteria (deminaralized) and prone to tooth decay.
