When it comes to healthy skin, there is a lot more involved than just finding the right cleanser or moisturizer. In order to maintain healthy skin, there are several things that need to be taken into consideration including diet, stress levels, sun protection, and more. Occasionally, even when all necessary steps are taken achieve healthy skin, you may still suffer from acne or other skin problems. If this happens, it might be a good idea to visit a dermatologist or other skin care specialist. The following outlines some of the basic day to day steps that can be taken to keep your skin looking healthy and fresh.

Sun Protection

Exposing your skin to the sun can cause wrinkles, age spots, and can also greatly elevate the chances of getting of skin cancer. For these reasons, it is really important to take care of your skin by protecting it from the sun's damaging rays. To protect skin from the sun, sunscreen that has an SPF of 15, at the very least, should be applied daily and when outdoors at least once every couple of hours. The sun is at its strongest during the hours of 10:00 and 4:00 so attempting to stay in the shade during those hours will also help to protect your skin. If sun cannot be avoided, along with applying sunscreen, protective clothing such as hats and long sleeved shirts should be worn.

Eating a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet is not only necessary for overall health but has been proven to do wonders for your skin. Eating lots of vegetables and fruits along with whole grains and lean protein can aid in keeping skin healthy. Eating a diet rich in foods that contain Vitamin C will also keep your skin looking smooth and young. While there has not yet been a proven association between acne and diet, there has been some research done that has proven that diets rich in Vitamin C and low in refined and processed foods may keep your skin looking younger longer.

No Smoking

Smoking causes a whole host of health problems, the least of which includes unhealthy skin. Anyone interested in keeping their skin looking young and wrinkle free would be wise to give up smoking. Smoking causes premature wrinkles and makes skin look much older than it really is. This is due to the fact that smoking will cause the little blood vessels in the outer layer of skin to narrow, causing decreased blood flow. This eventually causes the skin to be depleted of the nutrients and oxygen that are necessary in maintaining it's healthy appearance. Smoking can also cause damage to elastin and collagen, both of which give your skin elasticity and strength. If the above reasons aren't enough to deter smoking, it should also be noted that the facial expressions made during smoking such as pursing lips will also contribute to getting wrinkles.

Keep Stress Under Control

While it can be difficult to manage stress levels it is important for not only your overall health but the health of your skin as well. High levels of stress can lead to breakouts and other skin issues and can cause your skin to be much more sensitive. Anyone under a lot of stress should take the necessary steps to manage it as it will not only help your skin but will make you feel better overall.

Tips For Taking Care of Your Skin

Along with all of the above information, there are additional steps that can be taken to maintain healthy skin. It is important for the health of your skin to treat it gently. Bath and shower time should be limited and water should be adjusted to warm instead of hot as hot water can deplete your skin of important oils. It is also necessary to regularly moisturize your skin and as an added measure, a moisturizer with SPF should be used. Avoiding strong scents in detergents and other soaps will help keep the skin healthy as strong cleansers can remove important oils from the skin just as with hot water.

Ultimately, the type of skin care needed to maintain healthy skin will vary from person to person. What works for one person may not work the same for another. It is important to find a balance and do what works for you. To learn more about healthy skin care, take a look at the following resources.
